old town gardens
about the farm
The name Old Town Gardens immediately gives rise to thoughts of history. Bob and late wife, Lois Daniels do have history here on the island, being the West Tisbury Farmer’s Market managers throughout the 1970s in the formative years of the market. Lois was a Tilton raised on family land on Indian Hill Road in West Tisbury. After college and teaching off island, she returned to the island with Bob and they took up farming at their current location in Edgartown, mainly to give the kids work to do to keep them occupied. Lois loved flowers and brought jams and baked goods to the market in those early years, and Bob and daughter Lynne continue the tradition bringing flowers, especially dahlias and lupine, now 45 years later. At 90 years old and counting, Bob knows his potatoes, growing 17 different varieties, which they harvest each week along with seasonal crops such as peas, or fresh garlic, or scapes which Lynne likes to use sautéed with steak or paired with peas as a side dish. If going for a visit to their 17-acre farm on a Tuesday or Friday, look for 51 Road to the Plains and Lois Lane, named after Lynne’s mom. The farm is especially pretty when the flowers are blooming.
